Yoga FAQ: Your Common Questions Answered

In this article we go through the most frequently asked questions about yoga. Yoga is a very old teaching that has become far more popular today, and it has naturally raised a lot of curiosity.

1. What Age Can You Start Yoga?

Yoga is not an exercise with an age limit. People can start from childhood and there is no upper age limit. Children can begin yoga from around the age of 3. It can be practised at any age, though starting earlier means you can enjoy its calming, relaxing effects for longer.

2. How Often Should You Practise Yoga?

If you ask when and how often to practise yoga to get the most out of it, we would suggest practising every day. Many people live busy lives, however, so this is not always possible. Even 2-3 days a week is a good, realistic routine. What matters most here is consistency.

3. What Should You Wear for Yoga?

If you can, you may prefer clothes made specifically for yoga, but this is not essential and you do not have to buy special clothing. The only things to watch for are that your clothes are neither too tight nor too loose, and that they do not make you feel restricted.

4. Are There Any Restrictions in Yoga?

You do not face any prohibitions when practising yoga. Many people find that yoga helps them relax in body and mind and supports clearer thinking and decision-making, and over time they may choose to let go of habits that no longer serve them.

5. What Does Guru Mean?

The word guru literally means teacher, spiritual guide or adviser. In yoga it describes someone who teaches and shows the way, so it is a term used for yoga teachers.

6. What Is Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is a style of yoga that comes from Taoism, one of the key teachings of Chinese philosophy. It includes classic yoga poses but, unlike them, the poses are held for longer. Holding them for longer is meant to gently stretch and lengthen the connective tissues.

7. What Are the Limbs of Yoga?

The limbs of yoga are divided into 8, and a rounded yoga practice is made up of these limbs. They and their meanings are as follows:

  • Yamas: self-restraint (social practices)
  • Niyamas: self-discipline (personal practices)
  • Asana: postures
  • Pranayama: development of breath and prana
  • Pratyahara: withdrawal of the senses
  • Dharana: concentration
  • Dhyana: meditation
  • Samadhi: complete absorption.

8. How Many Times a Week Should I Practise Yoga?

In yoga there are no set numbers of repetitions or weekly targets. Its general philosophy is relaxation and freedom, so how many times you practise each week is entirely up to you. You can practise all seven days if you wish; there is no problem with that. Just try to practise at least 2-3 times a week.

9. Can I Eat Before Yoga?

It is best to avoid heavy meals or foods that make you uncomfortable before yoga. Light options such as a banana, an apple or a few almonds work well. In general, it helps to eat at least 1.5-2 hours before your session.
