Healthy Weight Gain Nutrition Counselling

When people hear the word "diet", they usually think of losing weight. Yet gaining weight can be just as challenging, and being underweight affects energy, immunity and overall health. Healthy weight gain is not about eating as much as possible: it starts with understanding why your body weight is low, then building an eating pattern that adds energy and protects muscle mass.

Why can it be hard to gain weight?

Low body weight develops when the energy you take in is consistently lower than the energy you use. Common contributing factors include:

  • Irregular meals, long gaps without eating or a very busy schedule
  • Low appetite, stress or emotional strain
  • High levels of physical activity without enough fuel
  • Digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease, or an overactive thyroid
  • Some medications and other medical conditions
  • Eating disorders or fear of gaining weight, which need specialist psychological support as well

A body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 is generally defined as underweight. Because the causes vary, medical conditions should be assessed by your doctor first; nutrition then supports the plan.

What being underweight can mean for your health

Being underweight can contribute to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, low energy, feeling cold, hair loss, a weaker immune system, reduced muscle strength and, in some cases, effects on reproductive health. Addressing nutrition early helps you feel stronger in daily life.

How a weight gain plan is built

We begin with your health history, recent blood tests, sleep and working hours, food preferences, allergies and how you feel about your body. The plan then focuses on:

  • Energy-dense, lower-volume foods: for example, dried fruit, nuts, nut butters, olive oil, avocado and full-fat yoghurt add energy without filling you up too quickly.
  • Regular meals and snacks so you are not relying on a few large meals.
  • Enough protein, combined with appropriate exercise, to support muscle rather than only fat gain.
  • Practical tips, such as drinking fluids between rather than with meals, and choosing foods you genuinely enjoy.

If you train regularly, the plan can be combined with sports nutrition principles. If a digestive condition is involved, see medical nutrition therapy.

Online or in person

You can work with me in person at the Ataşehir office in Istanbul, where the first session includes a body composition analysis, or online by video call in English from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or anywhere else. Online, you share your weight and measurements from home. In both formats, your plan is reviewed at regular follow-up sessions and adjusted as you go. Results vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Can't I just eat more junk food to gain weight?

Uncontrolled weight gain from highly processed foods can harm your health. The goal is to gain weight with nutrient-rich foods while supporting muscle mass.

How quickly will I gain weight?

There is no fixed timeframe. It depends on the cause of low weight, your appetite, activity and how consistently the plan fits your routine.

Do I need to see a doctor first?

If you have lost weight without trying, or have digestive, thyroid or other symptoms, please see your doctor. I work alongside your doctor's assessment.
