What Is the Difference Between Veganism and Vegetarianism?

Although vegetarianism has been known for many years, we can say that we have only started to hear about veganism widely in recent years. These concepts, which are often confused with each other, have both similarities and differences. What is the difference between veganism and vegetarianism?

What Is the Difference Between Veganism and Vegetarianism, and Which One Is Chosen?

In vegetarianism, meat and other animal flesh is not eaten. The main difference between veganism and vegetarianism is that in veganism, in addition to animal foods, products made from animals are also avoided, and even industrial products made using animals are not used. Beyond this, the differences between veganism and vegetarianism are as follows:

  • In vegetarianism, primary animal products such as meat, chicken, turkey and lamb are not eaten, but foods produced by animals, such as eggs, milk, yoghurt and kefir, may be chosen. In veganism, these are avoided completely.
  • No animal ingredient should be used in the preparation of a meal that vegans eat.
  • Vegans also do not eat foods such as honey.
  • Vegans do not use clothing made with animal products, or cosmetic products tested on animals.
  • Vegans do not take part in any show in which animals are used, and they also do not visit places such as zoos.

Which Is Healthier?

When comparing which is healthier, vegan eating or vegetarianism, there is little difference between the two ways of eating when each is followed properly. Vitamin B12, iron and omega-3 supplements need to be taken regularly, and you should be under your doctor's follow-up.
