Foods That Support Digestive Health

The digestive system is essential for absorbing nutrients from food and eliminating waste. To look after it, it helps to eat foods that are rich in fibre, contain probiotics and are high in antioxidants. Here are some of the foods that support digestive health.

1. Fibre-rich foods

Fibre helps regulate bowel movements, which can lower the risk of constipation, and it supports the gut microbiota.

  • Whole grains: oats, wholemeal bread, brown rice, quinoa
  • Pulses: lentils, chickpeas, beans
  • Vegetables: spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots
  • Fruit: apples, pears, strawberries, bananas

2. Foods rich in probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support the gut microbiota.

  • Yoghurt and kefir (plain, unsweetened versions are preferable)
  • Sauerkraut and kimchi
  • Kombucha (fermented tea)
  • Miso and tempeh

3. Prebiotic foods

Prebiotics feed probiotic bacteria and in this way support gut health.

  • Garlic and onion
  • Leeks and asparagus
  • Apples and bananas
  • Flaxseed and oats

4. Water and hydrating foods

Drinking enough water makes digestion easier and supports the body's natural waste removal.

  • Around 2 to 3 litres of water a day is generally recommended.
  • Include foods with a high water content, such as cucumber and watermelon.

5. Healthy fats

Healthy fats support the digestive process and can make bowel movements easier.

  • Olive oil and avocado oil
  • Walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts
  • Chia seeds and flaxseed

6. Antioxidant-rich foods

Antioxidants help protect the cells that line the gut.

  • Green tea
  • Ginger and turmeric
  • Pomegranate, blueberries, blackberries
  • Carrots and sweet potato

7. Foods that ease digestion

Some foods and drinks can help settle the stomach and ease bloating by supporting regular bowel movements.

  • Chamomile and fennel tea
  • Apple cider vinegar (diluted in water)
  • Mint and ginger
  • Yoghurt and drinks containing probiotics
